Learners to Lawmakers!

Please join our historic Afro Hair Law campaign. Everyone from 4 years old to 94 years old can work together to make Britain a just place for people with Afro hair. We hope that you can adapt these ideas and resources for your learners at different Key Stages.

Using the power of persuasion, your learners can produce:

  • A letter to the Prime Minister.
  • A poem expressing feelings about Afro hair.
  • A poster supporting a new law to protect Afro hair from discrimination.
  • World Afro Day Letter headed paper is downloadable
  • Friday September 14th post and share some examples of their work and tag @worldafroday #fixthehairlaw #AfroEqualityAct

You can have discussions about whether Afro hair is treated differently and fairly.

Can everyone with Afro hair feel confident about their hair in all spaces: school, work, sports?

What are UK laws for and how do they protect everyone and how do they help minority groups?

Discussions around skin colour as a protected characteristic of race but not yet hair. Why do you think this is?

Discuss the slogan: “Fix the Law, not our Hair” what do learners understand about this message?

How would learners feel about Britain becoming the first country to pass a law protecting Afro hair from discrimination?

Secondary Schools only

Over 26 States in America have passed the CROWN Act. Can learners research what the letters in the word CROWN stand for?

France is also looking at laws to protect Afro hair. How will it differ to the US CROWN Act? https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20240327-unprofessional-dirty-and-wild-french-parliament-takes-up-hair-discrimination-bill

The French approach will protect hair for everyone and not specifically Afro hair. French law does not recognise race, explore how this is influential in their approach.

How would learners feel about Britain becoming the first country to pass a law protecting Afro hair from discrimination?

Share and shout

We would love to hear about you turning learners into lawmakers! Please capture some of your activities and lessons on video and share (with permission). These could be great moments in history!
